Charmingly dated. But with all the detail expected for a text book for teaching purposes. Each section ends with 'homework' questions that are quite challenging, and even if you're not intending to do the exercises, they will make you think, and possibly re-read the chapter to clarify what you've learned. The beauty of the book is the drafting instructions for now-vintage accents and styles, in particular, the collars and closures. The patience and attention to detail of 1940's dressmakers, sewing with very basic materials and machines is enviable. I feel quite guilty for even thinking that I would use my overlocker, or even zigzag stitch and buttonhole foot.I particularly liked the brief introduction. So many books today have the first quarter padded out with photos of rulers, tape measures and scissors etc. As if anyone would be considering learning pattern cutting without knowing these most basic tools.Only complaint was the condition of the book, intact but musty and itchy to hold. This was as I expected for the age of the book, so simple enough to treat for intruders and mould. It is perfectly fine now, so don't let the age or condition of a classic book put you off rescuing it. It will help you realise how similar the formulaic modern instructional books are today.
