Even though this book was written several decades ago, it provides timeless, caring counsel for members of the human race going through the pitfalls of seeking human love, meaningful relationships & vocation, and communion with God. Although written from a Christian vantage point, I can see how people of other faiths might relate to it as well. And although it describes experiences from the perspective of people who go through a more "normal" (for lack of a better word) progression of development to maturity, it is easy to apply to those of us whose life has not traveled in a straight line, who have spent much time "looking for love in all the wrong places", found what seemed like our true vocation later in the game, only to have opportunities snatched away, and after midlife, unexpectedly stumbled into that person with that certain chemistry and been knocked off balance to where it seemed like everything we know is wrong. The author ingeniously traces the connections between our fateful and passionate attachments and the longing to be reunited with our Creator. He offers the comfort that we must not deny or repress these emotions and experiences if we are to grow, and suggests a way, however painful, to break through to the best possible acceptance of self & others, and the closest semblance of intimacy, given our imperfect personalities in our imperfect world.
